치과는 유독 ‘아프다’는 인식때문에 ‘치과공포증(Dental Phobia)'이라는 단어까지 생겨났을 정도이다. 이러한 치과공포증의 원인은 어린 시절 겪은 치과 치료에 대한 나쁜 경험에서 비롯된다. 세심한 구강관리가 필수적인 아이들에게 치과는 공포의 대상이다. 특히 유아 환자의 경우 정서적·육체적으로 성숙되지 못한 발육 중인 과정에 있고, 낯선 환경에 매우 민감하게 반응하기 때문에 더욱 세심한 접근이 필요하다. 이러한 문제의식에서 출발한 ’퍼니스트리'는 '재미있는(fun) + 치과 진료(dentistry)'를 의미하는 말로, 어린 아이들이 두려움과 공포심을 가지기 쉬운 치과를 흥미로운 상상의 공간으로 바꾸어주는 서비스이다. 치과에 방문하기 전, 자신이 직접 만든 캐릭터가 치과에 대한 흥미로운 이야기를 들려주며, 실제로 치과에 방문하여 치료를 받을 때도 캐릭터가 세균과 싸우는 모습을 애니메이션으로 보여주며 흥미로운 경험을 제공한다. 유아 환자는 이러한 스토리텔링에 몰입함으로써 자발적으로 치료 과정에 참여할 수 있고, 치과에 대한 긍정적인 경험을 형성할 수 있다. |
