DESCRIPTION | |||
Postmodern art, inspired by sublime aesthetics, now ceases to imitate beautiful objects, pursues intense effects, or attempts unusual and shocking combinations. The present sublime is far removed from the 18th-century sublime concept of mathematical size or dynamic power that overwhelms humans in nature. It meant the strange effect we had in avant-garde art, the uncomfortable pleasure of being beyond the limits of rationality. Now art is not a beautiful thing but a powerful effect, not a routine and ordinary thing but a surprising and unusual thing, a phenomenon that common sense can not tolerate, but a shocking one that can not afford it. |
