DESCRIPTION
Postmodern art, inspired by sublime aesthetics, now ceases to imitate beautiful objects, pursues intense effects, or attempts unusual and shocking combinations. The present sublime is far removed from the 18th-century sublime concept of mathematical size or dynamic power that overwhelms humans in nature. It meant the strange effect we had in avant-garde art, the uncomfortable pleasure of being beyond the limits of rationality. Now art is not a beautiful thing but a powerful effect, not a routine and ordinary thing but a surprising and unusual thing, a phenomenon that common sense can not tolerate, but a shocking one that can not afford it.
