환경은 이제 지나치게 훼손되고 오염되었으며 자원은 지나치게 남용되어 고갈되어 가고 있다. 이로 인해 인류는 생존의 위협을 느끼게 되었으며 생태파멸은 곧 닥쳐올 인류의 숙명이 되었다. 이러한 위기는 우리 인간 삶의 모든 분야들에서 중심 틀을 뒤바꾸어 놓게 된다. 그렇기에 이제 인류는 전대미문의 이러한 위기에 대처하기 위한 새로운 방법을 찾아야 하는 절박한 처지에 있다.
